CHARLAS

Context Dependent Adaptation18 de Abril

Jorge Vallejos, Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Implementing context-dependent behavior of pervasive computing applications puts a great burden on programmers: Devices need to continuously adapt not only to their own context, but also to the context of other devices they interact with. We present an approach that modularizes behavioral adaptations into roles. Role selection takes the context of all the devices involved in an interaction into account, ensures an unambiguous scope of adaptation even in the presence of concurrency, and protects the privacy of the devices.

Pervasive computing: Applications and perspectives25 de Abril

Peter Barron, Trinity College Dublin

Jessie Dedecker, Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Pervasive computing is the idea of embedding technology and connectivity into everyday objects in such a way that it adds functionality to the environment in a useful and unobtrusive manner. We provide a general overview of the concept of pervasive computing (also known as ubiquitous computing or ambient intelligence), exploring the original motivations and technologies that have enabled it. We then focus on the broader issues facing pervasive computing in particular in middleware and application development. The talk will also explore the different application areas for pervasive computing.

Ambient-Oriented Programming2 de Mayo

Jessie Dedecker, Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Ambient-Oriented programming is a programming paradigm whose properties are derived from the characteristics of hardware platforms for mobile computing. Mobile hardware devices are often provided with wireless networks facilities, allowing them to engage in collaboration with their environment. However, the autonomous nature of these devices as well as the volatile connections over their wireless infrastructure has its repercussions on the software that employs them. This talk will also present AmbientTalk, a distributed programming language developed specifically for writing programs to be deployed on mobile ad hoc networks.

Stigmergy for Pervasive Computing9 de Mayo

Peter Barron, Trinity College Dublin

This talk explores how a biologically-inspired approach can be used to develop pervasive computing environments. In particular, we look at how the natural phenomenon of stigmergy can be applied to pervasive computing to accomplish a highly decentralized method of organizing the components of such an environment.

When: Thursday March 8, 12:00

Where: Auditorium 4th floor, DCC, FCFM, Univ. de Chile

Title: Predictive User Caches

Speaker: Benjamin Piwowarski, Yahoo! Research LA

Abstract

Web search engines consistently collect information about users interaction with the system. They record the issued query, the URL of presented and selected documents along with their ranking. This information is very valuable: It is a poll over millions of users on the most various topics and it has been used in many ways to mine users interests and preferences. Query logs have the potential to partially alleviate the search engines from thousand of searches by providing a way to predict answers for a subset of queries and users without knowing the content of a document. Even if the predicted result is at rank one, this analysis might be of interest: If there is enough confidence on a user’s click, we might redirect the user directly to the page whose link would be clicked. We present some early results with three predictive models based respectively on information of one user, a group of user and all the users for a given query.

Characterizing a Spam Traffic

Dr. Virgilio Almeida
Depto. de Ciencia da Computacao
Univ. Fed. de Minas Gerais
Belo Horizonte
Brazil

Presentación disponible: PDF 600 KB

The rapid increase in the volume of unsolicited commercial e-mails, also known as spam, is beginning to take its toll in system administrators, business corporations and end-users. Widely varying estimates of the cost associated with spam are available in the literature. However, a quantitative analysis of the determinant characteristics of spam traffic is still an open problem. This talk presents an extensive characterization of a spam traffic.

As basis for our characterization, standard spam detection techniques are used to classify over 360 thousand incoming e-mails to a large university into two categories, namely spam and non-spam. For each of the two resulting workloads, as well as for the aggregate workload, we analyze a set of parameters, aiming at identifying the characteristics that significantly distinguish spam from non-spam traffic, assessing the qualitative impact of spam on the aggregate traffic and, possibly, drawing insights into the design of more effective spam detection techniques.

Our characterization reveals significant differences in the spam and non-spam traffic patterns. E-mail arrival process, size distribution as well as the distributions of popularity and temporal locality of e-mail recipients are key workload aspects which distinguish spam from traditional e-mail traffic. We conjecture that these differences are consequence of the inherently different mode of operation of spam and non-spam senders. Whereas non-spam e-mail transmissions are typically driven by social bilateral relationships, spam transmission is usually a unilateral action, based solely on the senders’s will to reach as many users as possible.

Short Bio

Virgilio Almeida is professor at the Computer Science Department at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. His research interests include modeling large scale distributed systems, such as the Web and performance analysis. He held visiting professor positions at Boston University and Polytechnic University of Catalunya in Barcelona and held visiting appointments at Xerox PARC and Hewlett-Packard Research Laboratory.
